Garlic Math

How many bulbs do you need?

When FBG gardeners have extra seeds, amendments, bulk soil... we share the excess with others in the group. This month Brian's garden had an excess of garlic bulbs and offered them to the crowd. Cool. But how many is enough?

Garden Coordinator, Dianna Wiklund to the rescue who did the math and came up with this rough way to calculate your needs.

She figured on the low side so there will likely be more.

  • 6 large cloves per bulb*
  • 9 bulbs per pound = 54 planted cloves
  •  ( I went out and weighed some of my dry garlic)
  • plant about 5 " apart.
  • 54 x 5 = 270" of garden row 22.5 foot row
  • 10 lbs would be 225 foot row

Start planning now and plant them out in October for a July 2024 harvest.

* While there may be more than six cloves per bulb, always plant the largest for the best blubs the following year.
