24 Carrot Potluck, Gobbling Cobbler, and September Gardening Tips

As a very busy Summer begins to shift towards to cooler days, we have lots to recap from the last month! From our plant sale to our winter growing class and well over 1200# of fruits and veggies donated.

Though the days are getting shorter, we haven't run out of steam just yet! September looks to be a busy month with
Farm Tour just around the corner and our delicious 24 Carrot Potluck Party! Keep reading for more details.

Our Winter Growing Series was a huge success! The Winter Growing Zoom Class hosted by the WSU Master Gardeners and FBG was taught by Nita Wester and Lys Burden. The class addressed some things such as soil preparation; appropriate vegetable varieties; what can still be planted, plant spacing; frost, wind, rain, snow protection; and watering. The class was recorded and
can be watched here, free of charge.

The Winter Growing Panel and Tour at the Quimper Grange was a great opportunity for folks to see winter growing in action. The Panel featured Doug Van Allen, Nita Wester, Jacob and Turner of Water Moon Farm, Barbara Tusting, and Kathy Ryan. They addressed winter systems such as growing carrots in pots, row covers, hoop houses, additional lighting to harvesting cover crops for food, a variety of possibilities for increasing harvests from home gardens to small-scale production gardens. After the panel there was a tour of the Grange Garden to check out these processes in action!

A new blog post on the website showcases how the gleaners determine what fruit to pick and when!
Check out this article to read about a handful of fruit determinations such as Italian Plums, Cherries, Apples, and Figs! Another Gleaners blog post discusses ladder safety, proudly stating that "falling is for apples, not gleaners" and I think we all agree. That post includes a video as well!

Our "Grow A Row" plant sale was another big success!

We sold loads of winter veggie starts, lots of garden bed tunnel kits, and made lots of great connections! Shout out to the 7 folks who pledged to "grow a row" for the food banks and the many more who look forward to trying out winter growing for the first time!

Huge thanks to all the volunteers who made it happen, especially the fabulous lead Barbara Tusting!
