It's Sail Away Time at the Boat School Garden

11-9-2023

At the end of October, volunteers at the Boat School Garden celebrated their achievements of 2023 and set the gears in motion for another productive year in 2024.  A team of 7 volunteers met at the garden in the early afternoon to plant 100 cloves of garlic for 2024.  Garlic is an enjoyable crop that requires a bit of attention at planting, a bit of effort during the growing season, but mostly it requires 9 months of patience until harvesting, and what’s happening underground is a bit of a mystery!  In addition to working in Food Bank Growers beds, the team also helped out in a non-FBG bed by harvesting potatoes, readying the space for more garlic, and then planting it.

The volunteers at the Boat School Garden are a blend of ages and talents who consistently show up in mind, body and spirit.  They always pack along their wonderfully positive attitude and work hard for the couple of hours that we allocate to grow food for the food banks, socialize, and support each other.  As a way of showing appreciation the group was later treated to a celebration event at the home of the Garden Manager (Noreen Andrews) where they were joined by additional volunteers and enjoyed a warm outdoor fire, food and beverage, and singing with guitar accompaniment by our very talented Kelly.

Many thanks to the following volunteers who helped keep the Boat School Garden growing and giving in 2023:  Betsy Davis, Ryan Grossenbacher, Jennifer Hopkins, Piper Howith, Belinda Jimenez, Kelly Jimenez, Andy Politz, Lisa Politz, Elena Smith, Meagan Taylor,  and Jerome Zygar.

Submitted with Much Gratitude,

Noreen Andrews – Garden Manager
