Boat School Food Bank Garden

Now vs. Then

The Boat School Food Bank Garden is one of the great successes of how this community can come together to create something beautiful!

Just over a year ago, the Food Bank Growers and the Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding worked together to build a new garden from the ground up. More often than not, FBG works with gardens that already exist in some capacity. But we were proud to work with the full support of the Boat School to convert this old gravel pit into an abundant home for new garden beds and a world of possibilities.

Thanks to the vision of Executive Director, Betsy Davis, funding was approved to buy and build a new fence and 10 new garden beds. The overall mission for this garden is not just to grow for the food banks, but to help fight food insecurity within the Boat School Community. Four of these beds are dedicated food bank beds, while the others belong to members of the school community. This model is one that not all of our gardens use, but one that  works well for the boat school students who often cannot get to the food bank due to their class schedule. Food insecurity exists all around us and anyway we can help alleviate it from our community is a solution we want to be a part of.

Oh, the difference a year, and some TLC, makes!

This garden, though small, is a great place for garden learners, and lovers, to start. Out first garden manager, Amber D., did a great job helping with initial planning, organizing, and making the garden what it is today. In the transition period between managers, Betsy let us know she didn't want to lose the connection with FBG and worked hard to make sure we found the right person to take over. Betsy's unwavering support today means that out new garden managers, Noreen A. and Lisa P., can hone their gardening skills at this beautiful garden site, grow for the food bank, and help support the joint mission of getting students involved and feeding them along the way.

Today, this garden is growing kohlrabi, kale, lettuces, zucchini, and more for a food bank near you! There is also a number of fruit trees from Heartwood Nursery.
