Gleaning Apples and More

Gleaning by the Truckload

When the apples start coming, bring your truck to the tree. We are fortunate to have many backyard orchards to pick from when fall arrives. Plums, pears, Asian pears, apples, figs... would all rot on the ground or feed the deer if the Gleaners didn't snatch them at their prime and take them to schools.

The "gleaners" are part of the Food Bank Growers network, while they may not grow the food, they provide thousands of pounds of local fruit each year to the Food Banks, schools, churches, and senior centers.

Started by Seth Rolland in 2012 and officially dubbed the Quimper Community Harvest, the group is an efficiently run operation that kicks off in July when cherries ripen and ends in November (yes, even that late) with the very last apples.

Typically they pick on Tuesdays from 3-5 and Saturday's from 10-12. Volunteers are allowed to take fresh picks home following established guidelines making the effort not only fun, but pantry-filling.

Let us know if you would like to be on call list to pick. It's completely your choice of how many times you're able to help - one week or the full season. Ladders, picking bags, boxes, and instructions are given out prior to heading for the trees.
