The Tall and the Short of It

Everyone is having a weird year.

This one is right up there with crop circles and UGOs (unexplained growing objects). Belinda Jimenez (LEFT) points to two rows ofthe same pea seeds, planted at the same time, four feet apart, in the same soil conditions, the same watering and (presumedly) the same sun… and yet, one row is four feet high and the other is 1 foot high. Go figure.

Luckily everything else at Alice's Garden  is flourishing, flowering, and strawberrying!  (ABOVE) Check out how lush the kale and chard is growing.  Belinda said that she row covered the crops from the start and only took off the mesh for that morning's  tour.

One of the benefits of working with Food Bank Growers is seeing how other growers make the most of their space.  This garden is nestled inside a small front yard with years of well tended soil. Last week, 33.3 pounds of head lettuce was harvested from that section between the pea rows. This week chard replaced it and is ready to grow up strong -- we hope -- under the wireframe anything can happen.
