Winter Gardens Raised Out of the Swamp

Increased yields by 166.5 pounds!

Quimper Grange FBG garden co-manager, Barbara Tusting shared the success of the garden's recent upgrades with the Port Townsend Noon Rotary Club. The group donated the funds for the project.
What a difference in production simply by raising soil up enough so that the winter rains will drain off the roots of plants instead of drowning them. By raising the beds they were able to grow 166.5 more pounds of food in the same space. The raised beds also gave them a structure to secure mesh to keep the bugs away from tender plants.
Garden volunteers worked together to build the new beds from new 2x12 slabs of wood.

Above, Barbara points out the result of another grant by the Food Co-op to provide REALLY raised beds for those who can't bend over or have a wheelchair, but still want to participate in growing food for the food banks.
The Quimper Grange Garden Volunteers have proven that if you have the will to grow something, there are many ways to get the best results.
